In the Spotlight – Ben Ives (Coach)

Ben Ives | Coach.

CV:

  • NSBJRLC under 13s coach Head coach.
  • North Sydney Bears under 16s Academy
  • Assistant coach, North Sydney Bears Harold Matthews squad.

What is your coaching philosophy?BI: Communication is key. I’m not a person or coach that just barks orders. I want to make sure that my players understand why I’m asking them to do things a certain way and how it will help their development. There is a method to the madness and everyone is more engaged when they understand the purpose.

What do you enjoy about coaching?
BI: It is a privilege to play a small role in the development of young men (in the case of the under 13s) as players and individuals. I coached under 11s in 2021, under 12s in 2022 and this year under 13s. My plan is to stay with this group as they progress. At this age, they’re sponges. They’re keen to learn and they haven’t developed too many bad habits.

Why do you volunteer and support the NSBJRLC?
BI: I am the proud father of two amazing daughters who love their cricket. They have no desire to play rugby league, the sport I love. By volunteering, I get to give back to the community and stay involved in rugby league.

This is a great sport to play. It teaches you about teamwork, resilience, goal setting and it gives you attributes and skills that are transferable to all aspects of life.
