In the Spotlight – Andrew Kaless (Coach)

ANDREW KALESS

CV:
  • Under 13s Coach

What is your coaching philosophy?
AK: It’s all about putting in effort and having fun. I don’t want to put pressure on kids. I just want them to do their best and if they do their best, they will develop skills and enjoy themselves.

Teamwork is also very important. Rugby league is a team sport so we should be developing and growing as a team.

What do you enjoy about coaching?
AK: Seeing kids enjoy their footy, make progress and achieve the goals they set themselves.

I have coached this cohort since Under 6s so I have had the privilege of watching many of them develop as a player and teammate. They all have different personalities.

This year, Under 13s will play on a larger field under different rules, and that’s exciting for the kids because they see their NRL heroes play on the big oval and they want a taste of that action.

Why do you volunteer and support NSBJRLC?
AK: I played for Brothers as a kid and so did my three actual brothers. My parents always watched us play and I got to know some legends of the game such as Barry Hanley (former president of North Sydney Brothers Rugby League Club).

When I returned to Australia after a stint overseas, I wanted to get my son to play a team sport and Brothers were the first club that came to mind. Coaching my son has been a great experience. I get to see him play, develop and have fun. And I get to spend time with him doing something we both enjoy.

I am part of Brothers because I want to give back to a club that has given so much to me and my family as well as the broader community. There is a lot of need in the world and so much conflict, but as the expression goes “Be the change, you want to see”. It starts with me.
